Ericka Brown, M.D.,  current administrator of Harris Health System’s Ambulatory Care Services, has been named the new head of the system’s Ben Taub Hospital, a nationally recognized facility for its stroke, cardiac and trauma care.

Brown began her career with Harris Health in 2012 as administrator for its outpatient primary and specialty care across the system’s more than 40 facilities—health centers, clinics, specialty facilities, school-based clinics and mobile health units—located across Harris County. A family practice physician by profession, Brown has contributed greatly to the health system’s three-prong healthcare delivery approach that focuses on primary care, wellness and prevention.

“With her strong leadership skills and personal drive, Dr. Brown’s expertise in patient care has resulted in enhanced patient access and performance improvement at each facility or program she has overseen,” says George V. Masi, president and CEO, Harris Health System. “Her unique insight as a practicing physician ensures that patients at Ben Taub will continue to have access to exceptional quality hospital care.”

Under Brown’s leadership, Harris Health grew its specialty ambulatory care services with the opening of Smith Clinic and the Harris Health Outpatient Center. Additionally, the system opened six same day clinics and two new health centers.

“I’m proud to be a part of an organization that serves the needs of our underserved community better than any other, and in fact, at quality levels comparable to national standards of excellence,” Brown says. “I look forward to partnering with the medical staff at Ben Taub Hospital, the flagship of our organization. Together, we will continue to assure the highest quality care and continue the hospital’s tradition of excellence.”

She assumes the reins of a 586-licensed-bed facility and one of the nation’s premiere Level 1 trauma centers, one of only two such centers in greater Houston. The hospital also has earned the Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification by DNV Healthcare, the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus-Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus Award and the 2015 Mission: Lifeline® Gold Plus Receiving Center award from the American Heart Association for its treatment of severe heart attack patients—STEMI (ST-elevation myocardial infarction).

Ben Taub Hospital is one of the primary training facilities for residents and faculty from Baylor College of Medicine, an affiliation forged from the beginnings of Harris Health.

Prior to Harris Health, Brown worked as medical director for a multi-specialty group practice, Advocate Medical Group in the Chicago area, and served on several governing bodies for the organization. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Temple University, a medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago and a master’s in business administration degree from Texas Woman’s University. In 2010, she received the award for Exemplary Physician Achieving Exceptional Health Outcomes.

Brown replaces Dr. Robert Trenschel who left Harris Health earlier this month. She lives with her husband and family in the Sienna Plantation neighborhood of Missouri City.
