Houston Methodist Opens Applications for Summer Scholars Program
HOUSTON – (Dec. 13, 2023) – Houston Methodist is accepting applications for the 2024 Summer Scholars Program Administered by the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI), a 10-week, immersive program designed to broaden participants’ perspectives of career possibilities in the health care industry.
Now in its third year, the program provides hands-on learning and professional development experience in select non-clinical departments by offering rising undergraduate juniors and seniors from underrepresented populations interested in pursuing health care careers the opportunity to work side by side with hospital leadership and employees across the Houston Methodist system. Applications will be accepted through Feb. 2, 2024. The 2024 Scholars Program runs from May 28 – Aug. 2, 2024. Program requirements, application form and further details are available

The needs-based program offers professional development workshops to enhance career readiness and exposure to health care professionals in areas such as managed care administration, spiritual care, DEI, finance and human resources. Each participant will be awarded a $6,000 direct payment scholarship.
In 2023, 11 students participated in the program. One of those students, Ezekiel Olaiye, a graduate of Sugar Land’s Stephen F. Austin High School, a senior at Prairie View A&M University and aspiring physical therapist, was matched with leaders at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, where he was recently hired as a part-time rehab technician. Olaiye said participating in the program strengthened his commitment to pursuing a career in health care.
“Participating in the 2023 Scholars Program exposed me to diverse aspects of the field, broadened my perspective and positioned me to make meaningful contributions to patient care. I am excited about the prospect of integrating these experiences into my journey towards becoming a physical therapist,” Olaiye said. “My advice for students considering the 2024 program is to approach it with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Embrace challenges, build connections with mentors, and use the opportunity to explore different facets of health care.”
Arianne Dowdell, vice president, chief diversity, equity & inclusion officer at Houston Methodist, says the program explores health care opportunities through the lens of diverse perspectives.
“The Summer Scholars Program is a key initiative in supporting Houston Methodist’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable workforce,” Dowdell said. “We are excited to welcome the third cohort of outstanding students from diverse backgrounds this summer and provide these future health care leaders with the insight, knowledge and professional development skills needed to successfully embark upon their career journey in the evolving health care industry.”
