Fifth Annual Eye Expo at UH Offers Resources to the Visually Impaired
\nCenter for Sight Enhancement Collaborates with Houston Area Visually Impaired Network<\/p>\n
A vision expo is coming back to the University of Houston for its fifth year Saturday, July 30. Hosted by the University Eye Institute\u2019s Center for Sight Enhancement (CSE) in the UH College of Optometry, the event addresses advocacy for the visually impaired in the community, workplace and government.<\/p>\n
With the theme of \u201cAdvocacy In Action,\u201d the fifth-annual Houston Area Insight Expo is open to the public and will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Health and Biomedical Sciences Building. Sponsored by the Houston Area Visually Impaired Network (HAVIN), a 501(3)c non-profit organization, the event will offer programming, workshops and shared resources for the greater Houston visually impaired community. Breakfast will be served, and a variety of vendors and organizations will have information and products on display.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s keynote speaker is Diego Demaya, an attorney with the Southwest ADA Center, which is the Southwest\u2019s leading resource on the Americans with Disabilities Act and related disability rights laws. The center is part of the ADA National Network funded by the NIH\u2019s National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research. Demaya specializes in labor, education and health care issues and is a member of the Houston Commission on Disabilities and past president of the Houston Council of the Blind.<\/p>\n
The cost for early bird pre-registration by July 15 is $5 and comes with an exclusive door-prize drawing. After that date, the pre-registration cost of $10 comes with a second door-prize opportunity open to advance ticket holders only. While walk-ins are welcome, attendees must pre-register prior to the event date to be eligible for either of these two door prize drawings.<\/p>\n

Using the latest technology, training and techniques, the CSE strives to help visually impaired patients achieve independence and an improved quality of life through vision rehabilitation. HAVIN is comprised of various volunteer support groups from across Houston. Its vision is to educate, provide peer support and unify the visually impaired community in the Greater Houston area.<\/p>\n
