On Memorial Day<\/a>, we honor those who have served our country in the U.S. Armed Forces.<\/p>\n A wreath-laying ceremony at the Houston VA National Cemetery<\/a> this morning\u2014open to media only due to the coronavirus pandemic\u2014took the place of a public Memorial Day program and included a moment of silence and the playing of “Taps<\/a>.”<\/p>\n \u201cThis year, by necessity, will be different from past Memorial Day observances,\u201d said Roy Luera, Houston VA National Cemetery director, in a statement released before the ceremony. \u201cWhile we cannot hold a large Memorial Day program as was typical in years past, we will still honor veterans and service members with the dignity and respect they have earned through their service and sacrifice.\u201d<\/p>\n The Houston VA National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr., will be open on Memorial Day from dawn to dusk for public visitation. Families are welcome to maintain the tradition of placing flowers and small American flags at their veteran\u2019s gravesite. All visitors are expected to adhere to health and safety guidelines and maintain physical distancing.<\/p>\n
