{"id":12937,"date":"2018-11-28T21:59:58","date_gmt":"2018-11-28T21:59:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tmc.edu\/news\/md-anderson-extends-cancer-prevention-mission-as-houston-dynamos-jersey-partner\/"},"modified":"2019-08-16T15:04:40","modified_gmt":"2019-08-16T15:04:40","slug":"md-anderson-extends-cancer-prevention-mission-as-houston-dynamos-jersey-partner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tmc.edu\/news\/2018\/11\/md-anderson-extends-cancer-prevention-mission-as-houston-dynamos-jersey-partner\/","title":{"rendered":"MD Anderson extends cancer-prevention mission as Houston Dynamo&#8217;s jersey partner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new health-based alliance between\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\">The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center<\/a> and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstondynamo.com\">Houston Dynamo<\/a>\u00a0will place the hospital&#8217;s logo on the chest of every player in the first season-long, cause-related jersey partnership in Major League Soccer (MLS) history while advancing cancer prevention by excluding smoke and tobacco from the entire BBVA Compass Stadium campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow how cool is that?\u201d MD Anderson President Peter Pisters, M.D., quipped during a news conference on Nov. 28, 2018. \u201cWhen you think about it, it\u2019s two great organizations coming together for the fantastic gain and incredible mission of ending cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pisters explained that one of the most exciting parts of the multi-year collaboration will be the worldwide extension of MD Anderson&#8217;s reach and audience for cancer prevention messaging through community outreach opportunities, survivorship celebrations and public service announcements as well as education and philanthropic initiatives.\u00a0Smoking and tobacco have been prohibited inside the stadium&#8217;s seating bowl and concourse, but now the policy will be property-wide.<\/p>\n<p>The crowd\u2014full of nurses and clinicians who see the devastating effects smoking and tobacco use have on the human body in the form of cancer\u2014erupted in applause during several points in the program.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46241\" style=\"width: 1454px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46241\" class=\"wp-image-46241 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tmc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/06\/jersey.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1444\" height=\"797\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-46241\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MD Anderson President Peter Pisters, M.D., left, poses with cancer survivors and others wearing the new Houston Dynamo jersey featuring the cancer center&#8217;s logo during an announcement on Nov. 28, 2018. (Photo courtesy of MD Anderson)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Starting Jan. 1, 2019, the world-renowned hospital will be the official cancer center and jersey partner for the\u00a0city\u2019s two-time Major League Soccer (MLS) champions.<\/p>\n<p>That means players will become global cancer-prevention ambassadors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery single game\u2014it\u2019s televised in over 100 countries\u2014and I\u2019m proud to say that every time we go out on the field, we will have MD Anderson and \u2018fight cancer,\u2019 and the world will see that,\u201d said celebrated professional boxer and businessman Oscar De La Hoya, a minority owner of the team.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46213\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46213\" class=\"wp-image-46213 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tmc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/06\/IMG_1886.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-46213\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MD Anderson employees Han Le, left, and Joan Woods show off their balloon animals during the announcement festivities.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Soccer enthusiasts will see benefits too.<\/p>\n<p>The organizations are working together to offer healthy concession menu items for the 2019 season and will make sunscreen available for fans for every game played during daylight. Fans will have an option to contribute to MD Anderson when they purchase tickets and the Houston Dynamo will donate a portion of all individual ticket sales to the cancer center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor us, it\u2019s about the partnership,\u201d said Houston Dynamo Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer David Brady. \u201cIt\u2019s about the passion, and, really, it\u2019s about amplifying the message that the people in these buildings here work so hard, every single day, to do. And that is to end cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The crowd caught a first glimpse of the new jersey, which includes MD Anderson\u2019s red strike-through-cancer logo, during a ceremonial \u201cStarting XI\u201d photo formation on the stage, which featured Pisters, Dynamo owner Gabriel Brener, goalkeeper\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstondynamo.com\/players\/chris-seitz\">Chris Seitz<\/a>\u00a0and midfielder\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstondynamo.com\/players\/memo-rodriguez\">Memo Rodriguez<\/a>\u00a0along with a group of pediatric and adult cancer survivors.
