Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center hosts Adult Congenital Heart Symposium

1 Minute Read

Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center will host its second annual Adult Congenital Heart Symposium for patients, families, and physicians on Nov. 19, 2016.

“For the first time in history, patients born with congenital heart disease are surviving and even thriving in adulthood, many with a normal life expectancy,” said Dr. C. Huie Lin, an adult congenital interventional cardiologist and the head of the Houston Methodist Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program. “This symposium will give them a chance to learn about treatment options, advances in the management of their disease, and allow them to meet other patients who are dealing with the same issues.”

Patients and their families will hear lessons and tips from adult congenital heart experts from around the country. There will also be several hands-on components, including a CPR class and the opportunity to work with valves, devices, and simulators at the state-of-the-art Houston Methodist Institute for Training, Innovation & Education (MITIE). An ice cream social, including a photo booth, will give attendees the opportunity to mingle with physicians and exhibitors before the physician-only sessions begin in the afternoon.

“In many instances, congenital heart disease patients fall off the radar when they become adults. Thus, they do not receive the proper medical care for their condition,” Lin said. “We believe this symposium will help them find out that they are not alone and that there is a place they can go and things they can do to receive the best treatment. They also will have the opportunity to talk directly to experts who treat their condition.”

The event will be held at the Houston Methodist Research Institute, located at 6670 Bertner Ave. in the Texas Medical Center.

Please register for the symposium at events.houstonmethodist.org/ach-guest by November 12. For more information, please contact the DeBakey Center for Cardiovascular Education & Training at dicet@houstonmethodist.org or call 713.441.6507.
