The Health Museum Becomes a Smithsonian Affiliate

1 Minute Read

The Health Museum today became a Smithsonian Affiliate, the sole museum in the Houston Museum District with such an honor. Johnson Space Center is the only other Smithsonian Affiliate in the area.

In a ceremony that included local dignitaries, Melanie Johnson, Ed.D., president and CEO of The Health Museum, said she was “simply thrilled” with a designation that aligns The Health Museum with the Smithsonian — “the absolute best in museums” and an institution that holds nearly 154 million objects and artifacts. The Health Museum, she added, is deeply rooted in a history of love and compassion for the Houston community, and the entire staff is eager to “take our museum to a national level.”

As a Smithsonian Affiliate, The Health Museum enters a long-term partnership with the Smithsonian that will create collaborative opportunities for educational programs and open the door to the loan of Smithsonian artifacts and traveling exhibitions.

At the ceremony, Smithsonian Secretary David Skorton said that The Health Museum was an “exemplar of a modern museum,” with exceptional presentation of exhibits, interactive experiences for visitors and educational opportunities.

Houston has become a worldwide magnet and cultural center, known for its medical care and research, Skorton said.

“The Texas Medical Center?” he added. “Wow. It’s unbelievable.”
