Do you have an idea for a medical product or technology?
The Texas Medical Center innovation team can help.

TMC Alpha provides a pathway for any innovator affiliated with a TMC member institution to find support for development and commercialization of their idea or product.

TMC Alpha FAQs

Who is eligible for TMC Alpha?

TMC Innovation is committed to supporting our member institutions; therefore, individuals who are employed by, or have an appointment with, a TMC Member Institution are eligible to participate. A full list of member institutions can be found here: https://www.tmc.edu/about-tmc/our-members/.

How do I get started?

An easy way to get started is to attend our Lunch & Learn to meet our team and other like-minded individuals in the community. For those interested in the pitch or mentoring sessions, please inquire by emailing tmcinnovation@tmc.edu.

How do I protect my idea?

These sessions are not intended to risk your ideas. In fact, these sessions will not discuss the technological mechanisms in detail. However, we strongly encourage you to reach out to your institutional technology transfer office if you have any questions or concerns.

What will be discussed?

Our team will focus on providing technology development and commercialization support including areas such as clinical unmet need, market opportunity, stakeholder analyses, clinical workflow, regulatory considerations, legal/security/compliance, sales, reimbursement, product development, effective communication, and building a team.

What is the cost?

All of these sessions are free. We do request some of your valuable time in joining us at TMC Innovation.

Can I sign up for more than 1 session?

Yes! TMC Alpha is intended to provide you with as much support as possible. This means you can sign up for the Coaching and Pitch sessions on the same day, as well as sign up for repeat sessions monthly. In fact, our participants who enact the recommendations received in previous sessions and report their findings in follow-up sessions gain the most from continued advice and accountability.

Why do you have 3 different sessions?

Each session, whether it be the Lunch & Learn, Pitch, or Coaching session is intended to access each participant’s unique way of learning and/or engage different aspects of their project. For example, participants can use the Pitch session to work on their communication and messaging skills, while using the coaching sessions to dig into their go-to-market strategy.

Will I be encouraged to reduce or leave my clinical responsibilities in order to see my idea to fruition?

No. We need clinicians who are brimming with brilliant ideas to continue to pull from their clinical experience to develop even more innovations. We encourage the development of ideas that are the most commercially promising and we are here to help guide these ideas to the next stage. This may include more research, talent and team recruitment, and beyond.

How early or late can I be in the product development process to benefit from TMC Alpha session?

Our team is experienced in providing guidance and connecting entrepreneurs at all stages within the product development life cycle. This means that you can be as early as the ‘idea’ stage or as late as starting first-in-human clinical trials with your technology.

Who will I be pitching to or meeting with in the coaching sessions?

You will have the opportunity to pitch in front of or receive coaching from the TMC Innovation Strategy team and select TMC Advisors. These are individuals with technical expertise in areas of medicine, research, and/or product development as well as a comprehensive understanding of business strategy.
