{"id":2458,"date":"2019-07-02T04:12:59","date_gmt":"2019-07-02T04:12:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tmc.edu\/health-policy\/?page_id=2458"},"modified":"2020-01-16T15:48:20","modified_gmt":"2020-01-16T15:48:20","slug":"disaster-policy-grants","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.tmc.edu\/health-policy\/about\/disaster-policy-grants\/","title":{"rendered":"Natural Disaster Policy Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"lead text-primary\"><p>\n<p>The Texas Medical Center Health Policy Institute is providing grant funding to support research on ways Houston-area officials can coordinate their efforts in the wake of a natural disaster.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Researchers hope that by closely tracking the way organizations involved in the Hurricane Harvey recovery interacted with each other, they may be able to improve future collaboration if disaster strikes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are so grateful to the many organizations, agencies and volunteers across the region who continue to assist with Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts,\u201d said Arthur \u201cTim\u201d Garson, Jr., MD, MPH, MACC , director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmchealthpolicy.org\">Texas Medical Center Health Policy Institute<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019re looking forward to providing them with this valuable tool to support their efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The research team consists of researchers from <a href=\"https:\/\/sph.uth.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Public Health<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/kinder.rice.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rice University Kinder Institute for Urban Research<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/bjmlspa.tsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Texas Southern University Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers will perform a type of study called a \u201csocial network analysis\u201d to determine how the various entities involved in the recovery interact, including organizations involved in law enforcement, public health, flood management, emergency management, housing and disaster relief.<\/p>\n<p>They hope their work will help identify ways to improve the flow of information across the region, reduce duplication of efforts and support vulnerable populations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re interested in making sure the support efforts are coordinated well, so that people and communities can link up with the help they need,\u201d said the research team\u2019s leader, Eric C.
