Carolyn J. Belk, J.D., R.N., currently holds the position of vice president of government affairs for Houston Methodist. She holds a Doctor of Jurisprudence from South Texas College of Law and a B.S. in nursing from Texas Woman’s University. Belk joined The Methodist Hospital System working as governance counsel for Methodist’s entities. In 2004, she initiated Methodist’s Government Affairs Program—which developed into her current full-time role. Belk began her nursing career working in pediatric intensive care with Ben Taub Hospital, which gave her broad public health experience working with children and families. In 1982, she began to work on her law degree hoping to combine that discipline with her health care experience. Completing her J.D. in 1985, she went on to serve as general counsel for MacGregor Medical Association and Kelsey Seybold Clinic. She also worked in the insurance industry, developing professional liability insurance products for hospitals while lecturing for the Certified Insurance Counselors Program.
