The Power of Life concert by the Texas Medical Center Orchestra

Sunday, February 26, 2023 | 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

The second concert of the Texas Medical Center Orchestra’s 2022-2023 season will focus on “The Power of Life” and the human ability to embrace the gifts and struggles that life holds for us. Finnish composer Rautavaara wrote “In the Beginning” to create a picture of the wonder of life. The piece opens with micro elements merging together into matter followed by intense struggle ending with a big bang-creation of life. Life is pretty special and complex. When we think of how it all started and the chance that human life would evolve, we are in awe of the power of life. Sibelius’ second symphony was not only inspired by the optimism that Finland had to hold while fighting for its independence, but it was also inspired by a larger picture he had in mind: sharing the struggle, crisis, and the turning-point in the life of an individual.

Established in 2000, the Texas Medical Center Orchestra (TMCO) is one of the very few orchestras with its origin in the health professions. Most of the members are health professionals who have a dedication to music that goes beyond their daily occupations. The mission of the orchestra is to provide fellowship for its members, contribute culturally to the community, and raise awareness for medical and other local charities through its concerts and other events.
