The Ali Massumi Cardiac Arrhythmia Symposium

Saturday, February 18, 2023 | 8:00 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.

The Ali Massumi Cardiac Arrhythmia Symposium is a 1-day hybrid symposium that will raise awareness and educate electrophysiologist, general cardiology and general medicine practitioners about new managements and developments in treating patients with arrhythmias.
The field of cardiac electrophysiology has evolved from a specialty that primarily managed arrhythmias with drug therapy to one with an expanded role of various nonpharmacologic therapies in detecting and terminating arrhythmias. Representative of this development are the rapidly evolving treatment options for patients with ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation (VT/VF), the most common cause of sudden cardiac death. Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) are highly effective in acutely terminating VT/VF, while percutaneous catheter ablation has emerged as a promising therapy for VT, in patients with and without structural heart disease.
There have also been recent changes to the way we manage patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Guidelines for the use of anticoagulants have been updated and expanded. There are non-pharmacologic therapies now available to prevent embolic stroke in patients who are at increased risk of bleeding. Catheter ablation for AF has become a mainstream treatment option and is preferred in patients with heart failure. Earlier intervention with catheter ablation in patients with paroxysmal AF can improve outcomes.
