Fergus Shanahan, MD, is Professor Emeritus at the Department of Medicine at University College Cork (UCC), National University of Ireland and a leading expert in gastroenterology and clinical immunology. He is the foundation director of the APC Microbiome Institute (now APC Microbiome Ireland), has published numerous scientific papers and co-written and edited numerous books. He has received several awards and accolades for his contributions to medicine. At the end of Dr. Shanahan’s presentation attendees should be able to:
• Describe the variability of the microbiome between and within individuals
• List the main factors that influence the composition of the gut microbiome
• Illustrate how this variability impacts the interpretation of microbiome studies in health and disease.
