All Aboard! The Metropolitan Transit Authority board of directors last month awarded a $9.2 million contract to the firm of Satterfield & Pontikes for the construction of a Texas Medical Center transit center on Fannin, which will offer bus and light rail service for the thousands of workers, patients and students traveling to the complex every day. On a nearly five-acre parcel of land, the TMC Transit Center will be the largest such facility in METRO history, forming a gateway of transit access to the world’s largest medical and health center. Features of the new facility include 16 bus bays, a pedestrian skybridge connecting the transit center to a METRORail station, two loading/unloading platforms covered by a canopy, elevators and a variety of passenger amenities such as vending machines, telephones, benches and information kiosks. The TMC Transit Center, scheduled to open in time for METRORail’s debut in early 2004, will offer connections for several local and commuter bus routes, TMC circulator shuttles and METROLift paratransit service. During peak hours, the facility will accommodate up to 160 buses. As part of METRO’s Regional Bus Plan, the project will be financed with 80 percent federal funds and 20 percent local funds. On Dec. 3, METRO hosted a ground-breaking ceremony on the site of the new facility at 6910 Fannin St. at Galen. The event was attended by Arthur L. Schechter, METRO board chairman, Shirley A. DeLibero, METRO president and CEO, and Richard E. Wainerdi, Texas Medical Center president and CEO. ©2006 Texas Medical Center E-Mail: tmcinfo@texmedctr.tmc.edu URL: http://www.tmc.edu/tmcnews/12_15_02/page_12.html |
