Texas Children’s Wellness Center Offers Cooking Classes, Grocery Scavenger Hunts By Maria Cramer Texas Children’s Hospital It’s never too early to learn the basics of good nutrition and healthy cooking. The Texas Children’s Wellness Center is offering cooking classes for children to help them learn about the importance of a healthy diet. Cooking classes are held on scheduled Saturdays, 10 a.m. to noon, in the Wellness Center kitchen of the Texas Children’s Clinical Care Center. During class, children prepare four to five healthy recipes and learn about nutrition. A registered dietitian coordinates menu-planning themes and nutrition lessons. In addition, the Wellness Center will offer supermarket scavenger hunts, a hands-on way for children to learn about healthy eating and grocery shopping. A registered dietitian will teach youngsters how to read food labels and shop for tasty low-fat foods. The hunts are held on scheduled Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., in a grocery store near the medical center. Parents interested in cooking classes and/or scavenger hunts may contact Judy Kallus, R.D., L.D., at (832) 822-7542, for dates of upcoming classes. The cost for each event is $20 per child.
