Skiing a “Slippery Slope” if Unprepared

Ski vacations are popular winter getaways for Texas families, but before heading for the slopes, be sure family health care documents are handy and organized in the event of an injury.

Skiing or snowboarding mishaps frequently require treatment by an emergency room physician. Having all your family’s health care information at your fingertips will allow the emergency room doctor to consult with your doctor back home.

Before heading out:

  • Make copies of insurance cards and other necessary documents related to each family member and take two copies with you.
  • On a separate piece of paper, have the names, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses of your family physician, pediatrician, or any other doctor who regularly sees members of your family.
  • Keep one set of documents in an envelope with your valuables and another taped inside a piece of hand-carried luggage.
  • Ensure that you have a list of family blood types and warnings about any allergies that might be affected by treatment.
  • Two family members should know what the family’s health care coverage is for emergency room treatment and be aware of any pre-approvals required for a hospital stay.

Safe skiing, and happy holidays.
