CowParade Houston 2001 is headed out to pasture, by auctioning many of the bovines from its beautifully decorated herd.

The first event was a live Sotheby’s auction of 55 cows, held Dec. 6 at the Wortham Center’s Cullen Theater in downtown Houston. An online auction of 150 cows began Dec. 7 at Amazon.com and continues through Jan. 11.

Proceeds from the auction benefit Texas Children’s Hospital’s Building for Children Capital Campaign and the Texas Children’s Cancer Center. As part of its sponsorship of CowParade Houston 2001, Sotheby’s took no commissions or fees for conducting the live auction.

Amazon.com’s online auction features cows displayed in groups of 20 to 30. Prospective bidders may register for the online auction by visiting http://www.cowparadehouston.com.

Hundreds of professional and amateur artists from throughout Texas painted and decorated 325 life-sized cows, which were displayed this fall around Houston streets, parks and landmarks.

"This has been a once-in-a-lifetime event for Houston and Texas Children’s," said Emily Crosswell, chair of CowParade Houston 2001. "CowParade has taken Texas Children’s out into areas of the community it never reached before, gaining exposure and expanding the boundaries of awareness in retail, commercial and artistic circles."

Crosswell added that the event was well suited to a children’s hospital.

"The cows truly were whimsical and helped to bring out the child in everyone involved with CowParade," she said.

Katy Gill, director of Development at Texas Children’s, said CowParade Houston has provided a wonderful opportunity for the hospital.

"CowParade gave the hospital a chance to raise significant funds for two of our highest priorities, the capital campaign and the Cancer Center," Gill said. "The magnificent herd also was a gift from the hospital to the city. Just seeing the smiles of children and families, especially during these difficult months of national tragedy, was so exciting."
