Renowned Orthopedic Surgeon Dies by STEFANIE ASIN The Methodist Health Care System Dr. Hugh S. Tullos, former chief of orthopedics at The Methodist Hospital and chairman of orthopedics at Baylor College of Medicine, died Nov. 29 in a car accident on the way to his ranch in the Hill Country region of Texas. He was 66. Dr. Tullos treated patients at The Methodist Hospital for 34 years and earned a reputation as one of the most respected orthopedic surgeons in the country, specializing in adult reconstruction and total joint surgery. He was a professor of orthopedics at Baylor College of Medicine and served as chairman of the orthopedic surgery department for more than 25 years. He was certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and was a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Tullos was nationally recognized for his work in total joint surgery including participation in the design of many implants, as well as a nationally and internationally recognized speaker in his field. He published more than 100 articles and co-authored several book chapters. Dr. Tullos, a Waco native, was the founder of HopeStar Orthopedic Group, a private practice with more than 40 orthopedic specialists. "Hugh’s death is a tremendous loss for everyone at Methodist. He was a superior surgeon who was always working to develop new techniques and treatments for the benefit of his many patients. Our prayers are with his family at this time.
