Beasley to Chair National Association of Public Health Schools By Jacqueline Preston The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Dr. Palmer Beasley, dean of The University of Texas School of Public Health at Houston, has been chosen as chair-elect of the Association of Schools of Public Health. The association, a consortium of 28 accredited schools of public health in the United States and Puerto Rico, elected Dr. Beasley at its 60th annual meeting held recently in Boston. He will serve a two-year term from Jan. 1, 2001 through Dec. 30, 2002. Dr. Beasley came to UT-Houston to lead the School of Public Health in 1987. The school now ranks third nationally in funded research and has grown in enrollment, programs, faculty and prestige. He earned his undergraduate degree at Dartmouth College and his doctorate at Harvard, and holds a master's degree in preventive medicine from the University of Washington. He also is professor of epidemiology and the Ashbel Smith Professor at the School of Public Health. Throughout his professional career, Dr. Beasley has been engaged in hepatitis research. Earlier this year, the king and queen of Thailand presented Dr. Beasley with the Prince Mahidol Award for Medicine in recognition of his 30-year fight against the hepatitis B virus in Asia. His work on hepatitis B also earned Dr. Beasley the King Faisal International Prize in Medicine in 1985 and the Charles S. Mott General Motors Foundation Prize in 1987. He is a Fellow of the Infectious Disease Society of America, and has been an advisor on hepatitis control to the World Health Organization and numerous governments.
