Oliver, chairman of the HCCS board of trustees; Dr. Norma Perez, dean of Health Sciences; Gloria J. Coleman, wife of the late Dr. Coleman; and Dr. Sylvia R. Ramos, president of HCC-Southeast.

The five-story structure, located at 1900 Galen Drive next to Shriners Hospital, is named in honor of the late Dr. Coleman, a native Houstonian who dedicated his life to serving his community through his numerous roles as an obstetrician and gynecologist, public servant and humanitarian.

The late Dr. Coleman served as regent or advisory board member on institutions of higher learning, including Texas A&M School of Medicine and the A&M Systems, The University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center, Texas Southern University and Huston-Tillotson College.

With its opening, the community college becomes the only one of its kind to build a permanent classroom facility in the Texas Medical Center. The 140,000 sq. ft. instructional site brings together under one roof all nursing and allied health career programs offered by the college.

Students have access to over 180 computers in skills labs, a computer center and in the library, as well as Internet connections in 20 traditional classroom .

State-of-the-art equipment necessary to teach skills required in the respective health careers they plan to enter is found in over 20 skills labs. For instance, a skills lab for students seeking to become surgical technicians is designed as an operating room. It is complete with operational scrub sinks, autoclaves, machines for administering anesthesia, and monitors, along with the numerous instruments and equipment required to perform all types of surgeries.

Other features include a student lounge and a 120-seat auditorium equipped for video conferencing.

Over 1100 students in 17 health science programs began their studies in the facility in late August when the fall semester began and, during their training, will gain clinical experience in Texas Medical Center institutions and other healthcare facilities in Houston and Harris County.

Eight one-year programs offered at the instructional site include dental assisting, diagnostic medical sonography (ultrasound), medical assistant, occupational therapy assistant, pharmacy technician, respiratory care technician, surgical technology and vocational nursing.

Nine two-year programs the college offers include associate degree nursing, emergency medical services, health information technology, human service technology, medical laboratory technician, nuclear medicine technology, physical therapist assistant, radiography and respiratory therapist.
