Chaplaincy Holds 16th Annual Benefit Dinner Lifeline Chaplaincy, a ministry that has offered spiritual, emotional, and financial support to thousands of Texas Medical Center patients, family members and caregivers for more than 18 years, recently held its 16th annual benefit dinner. The 600 attendees included former patients, financial supporters, Lifeline volunteers and staff, TMC social workers, pastoral care staff, and many others. KHOU Channel 11 anchor Greg Hurst emceed the evening’s event that featured a performance by the Fort Bend Boys’ Choir of Texas. Guest speaker Jeannette Clift George, founder and artistic director of Houston’s A.D. Players, was the guest speaker. Barbara Bamberg, pianist at St. Luke’s Methodist Church, served as musician. Lifeline’s Executive Director Virgil Fry gave a State of the Chaplaincy address outlining the chaplaincy’s progress over the past year and the upcoming move of the chaplaincy into a new facility near the Texas Medical Center. He also announced the addition of Paul Riddle to Lifeline’s staff. Riddle will be serving as an additional chaplain. Among those honored at the evening’s event were Terry Aven and John and Sue Mundy. Aven received the Marjorie Bourland Award for outstanding service as a volunteer. The Mundys were awarded the Homer O. and Betty Gainer Philanthropic Award for outstanding generosity to the chaplaincy over the years. Lifeline Chaplaincy was formed in 1983 under the name of the Churches of Christ Medical Center Chaplaincy. At that time, the chaplaincy employed one chaplain and a part-time secretary to serve patients at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center who were members of the Churches of Christ. Since then, the chaplaincy has grown. In 1997, the chaplaincy changed its name from the Churches of Christ Medical Center Chaplaincy to Lifeline Chaplaincy and began to add more staff. In addition to its five staff members, the organization also has more than 30 volunteers. Through the years, the group has met and continues to meet some of the nonmedical and financial needs of hundreds of patients and family members at Texas Medical Center institutions, regardless of religious affiliation. ©2006 Texas Medical Center E-Mail: tmcinfo@texmedctr.tmc.edu URL: http://www.tmc.edu/tmcnews/12_01_01/page_05.html |
