Acclaimed Photographers Explore End of Life's Journey
`Hospice: A Photographic Inquiry'
"Hospice: A Photographic Inquiry," a stirring exhibition at Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston, running through Dec. 19, 1999, investigates the power and growing importance of hospice care, an alternative approach to health care for the terminally ill. Organized by the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., in collaboration with the National Hospice Foundation, the exhibition features nationally renowned photographers who were commissioned to explore hospice from their own perspectives.
The artists were matched with programs in the hospice world, photographing patients, families and health care providers in different regions of the country. Each artist's diverse approach to the project has resulted in work which rises above physical distress and imminent death to show us the humanity and spirit embedded in this ultimate journey of life and in the ordinary people who are its subject.
The exhibition consists of approximately 140 photographs, a variety of multimedia components and is accompanied by a 172-page catalog.
The Hospice at the Texas Medical Center, Houston Hospice and Bering Omega Community Services collaborated with Blaffer Gallery to produce relevant public programming in conjunction with the exhibition.
