Pearly King and Queen of London Visit Local Shriners Hospital

A Pearly King and Queen recently visited the children of Shriners Hospital for Children in Houston during their visit to Houston for the British Festival, sponsored by the Daughters of the British Empire.

Pearlies are dedicated charity workers who continually assist with fund-raising activities for a multitude of different organizations. There are still approximately 40 active families working today, collecting for many different charities.

The "reigning monarchies" are Christopher and Joan Friend, Pearly King and Queen of the Isle of Dogs, Poplar.

The London tradition of the Pearly Kings and Queens was initiated in 1875, by an orphan named Henry Croft. By age 13, he became a municipal road sweeper and rat catcher in the market of Somers Town. He was particularly drawn to the Coster Mongers, who wore "Flash Boy Outfits," – distinguished suits with pearl button seams. Croft decided he would like to help the unfortunate and orphans, so he made a suit that was completely covered with pearl buttons. He became an instant attraction and was approached by many hospitals and churches to help raise money for the poor, deaf, dumb and blind. The Pearly tradition has survived for more than 125 years.
