HCC NURSING PROGRAM BEGINS THIS SPRING By DON FAUGHT Houston Community College For the first time in its 21-year history, Houston Community College will begin offering its two-year associate degree nursing program in the spring. Until now, the program has begun exclusively in the fall of each year.
The spring and fall programs will be held at HCC's Southeast Health Science Center campus, located at 1900 Galen Drive in the Texas Medical Center. While the new spring program offers classes in the daytime, fall classes continue to be offered in the daytime or evening. Roger Kline, who chairs the program, says "We are adding this class as a means of helping to alleviate the shortage of nurses in Texas Medical Center institutions, hospitals and health care agencies throughout Harris County and nearby communities."
Kline reports that up to 50 students will be accepted into the new spring program, which begins January 16, 2001.
Individuals interested in the spring semester program must complete an application process by December 1, and are encouraged to attend an information session conducted year-round on Mondays at 10 a.m. and Thursdays at 5 p.m. Admission specialists, nursing faculty and financial aid representatives will be on hand.
To be accepted into the program, candidates must have completed a minimum of 14 hours of specific academic courses, including English composition, general biology, anatomy and physiology, and introduction to psychology.
They also must have a composite score of 18 or above on the ACT test, or have earned a two-year associate or four-year baccalaureate degree.
