Two Rated “ Top Notch” in Houston Business Journal Survey

The Texas Medical Center and St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System have achieved top ranking in the Houston Business Journal’s “Best Places to Work” survey, which examines the quality of employee benefits at local organizations, including salary, vacation, health coverage, family friendliness, and work environment. Companies competing for this distinction were divided into categories of one to 100 employees, 101 to 500 employees, and 500 and more employees.

Seventy-five companies applied by completing a survey focusing on employee benefits. A value was given to each benefit – some with higher values than others. The maximum survey score was 225.

In addition to the company surveys, a portion of employees from each nominated company completed online surveys. The confidential questionnaire included questions worth one to five points each. The maximum survey score was 337.5.

Because the survey committee highly valued employees’ opinions, employee surveys were weighted heavier than company surveys, and accounted for 60 percent of the maximum score.

A benchmark was determined for each category, since large companies are able to offer more benefits than small ones. All companies on this year’s list of “Best Places to Work” achieved scores higher than the benchmark assigned to their category.

For companies with 101 to 500 employees, the Texas Medical Center ranked 10th out of 12 companies. The benchmark for this category was 408, and TMC’s score was 418. The center serves as manager of the TMC campus property, which includes five general-care hospitals, seven specialty hospitals, two medical schools, four nursing schools, a dental school, public health school, two colleges of pharmacy, various health science programs and a magnet high school, resulting in its informal designation as a “city within a city.” Acting through a policy council made up of chief executive officers of each institution, TMC moderates campus-wide issues, such as strategic planning or master planning.

St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System was the top-ranking company out of 12 finalists in the 501-and-over-employee category. The benchmark for this category was 416. St. Luke’s score was 508.
