Daniel J. Wolterman is the new president and chief executive officer of Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, effective Nov 1.

Wolterman replaces Dan S. Wilford as president and CEO. The Memorial Hermann Healthcare System board of directors announced in January that Wilford planned to retire Nov. 1 after leading Memorial Healthcare System and more recently Memorial Hermann Healthcare System for 18 years.

“After conducting an extensive nationwide search and interviewing a number of highly qualified candidates, we determined that the best person for the job was already here at Memorial Hermann,” said A.T. Blackshear Jr., board chairman. “Dan Wolterman is an experienced, proven leader who already enjoys strong relationships with our board members, medical staff, employees and communities.”

Wolterman joined Memorial Hermann in 1999 as senior vice president. Prior to assuming Memorial Hermann Healthcare System’s presidency, he oversaw the management of seven community hospitals and two long-term acute care facilities within the Memorial Hermann system. Wolterman has 22 years of experience in various executive positions in the health care industry and is a member of the board of directors of the Texas Hospital Association.

“I am tremendously honored by the opportunity to lead Memorial Hermann,” said Wolterman. “Because of Dan Wilford’s outstanding leadership over the past 18 years, Memorial Hermann is in excellent operational and financial condition, and its relationships with the medical staff, its employees and the communities it serves have never been better. With the help of our dedicated board of directors, exceptional medical staff, and outstanding management and employee team, I will build upon our system’s record of commitment to the communities we serve by focusing on patient care, medical education and research, and community involvement,” he said.

“I’m delighted with the choice of Dan Wolterman to lead Memorial Hermann into its next phase of growth and service,” said Wilford. “I’ve worked closely with him over the last four years and am confident that under his leadership, Memorial Hermann’s best days lie ahead.”

Wilford joined Memorial Healthcare System as chief executive officer in 1984. Under his leadership, the system has grown from three community hospitals to a comprehensive health care network that includes nine acute-care hospitals and two long-term acute-care hospitals, a physician organization, a retirement community, assisted living and two nursing homes, wellness programs, rehabilitation and home health programs, and an air ambulance service. Today Memorial Hermann is the largest not-for-profit health care system in Texas and among the largest in the country with comprehensive services and nearly 14,000 employees.
