2001 Rice Design Alliance Gala

At the 15th annual Rice Design Alliance Gala on Saturday, Nov. 3, the Alliance will honor the Texas Medical Center with its Award for Design Excellence. Funds raised will support the 200–02 RDA programs and the publication Cite: The Architecture and Design Review of Houston.

Since 1989, the Rice Design Alliance has presented its Award for Design Excellence to individuals and institutions that have made exceptional contributions to architecture and design in Houston and Texas. This year, the RDA celebrates the spirit of cooperation between the 42 institutions that make up the Texas Medical Center, and honors them as they continue the best medical health care, education, and worldwide research. In addition, the TMC is recognized for its efforts in urban planning to improve the quality of the built environment on its campus, and applauded for its decision to go forward with the adaptive reuse of the former Nabisco plant, located at 2450 Holcombe Blvd., which is also the site of the evening’s event.

The Texas Medical Center, founded in 1942, is a "city of medicine." Last year, there were 5.4 million patient visits to hospitals, clinics and institutions. At 700 acres, the TMC is the largest medical center in the world. In the next 15 years, the TMC will grow almost half again in size, adding 10 million square-feet of building space to its current 22 million square feet. Currently, more than $1 billion in new construction is underway.

It is anticipated that 1,000 architects, design professionals, engineers, contractors, RDA members and TMC representatives will attend this annual event. The evening of dinner and dancing will be catered by Jackson & Company, and the Island Mambo Jazz Kings will provide the entertainment.

Some of the past recipients of the Rice Design Alliance Award for Design Excellence include George and Cynthia Mitchell, Rice University, Warren S. Bellow Jr., Jesse H. Jones, Walter P. Moore, and BMC Software.
