"Celebrate Houston-Celebrate Texas" was the theme of the 2000 Denton A. Cooley Leadership Award gala recently held at the Westin Galleria Hotel. This year's recipient was Michel T. Halbouty, chairman and CEO of Halbouty Energy Company.

More than 900 guests attended this year's event which generated net proceeds of more than $430,000 for the Texas Heart Institute, making this year's presentation the most successful in the award's history.

A native Texan, Halbouty is known as a legendary wildcatter, a prolific author and a recognized authority in geoscience and petroleum engineering. His leadership experience includes chairing an energy task force for President Ronald Reagan; leading the former president's transition team on energy; and lecturing throughout the world. He has received numerous honors and awards from professional, civic and nonprofit organizations, and is a Distinguished Alumnus of Texas A&M University. He was instrumental in bringing the Bush Presidential Library to the A&M campus in College Station and is one of the founding members of the Texas Heart Institute's Board of Trustees.

Attendees were treated to the musical stylings of Tony Award-winner and native Texan Betty Buckley, whose performance history includes Broadway hits such as Cats and Sunset Boulevard as well as several films and television shows. She has also recorded 10 albums, including her latest CD Heart to Heart.

Chaired this year by the Honorable and Mrs. James A. Baker III, the annual black-tie event was established to recognize individuals for their outstanding contributions to society. Previous recipients include Dr. C. Everett Koop, President George Bush, Walter Cronkite, Charlton Heston, Larry King, and Betty Ford. Proceeds are used to strengthen and advance cardiovascular research at the Texas Heart Institute.
