Allison and its Aftermath:

By JENNIFER SNYDER
Harris County Medical Society

Houston's medical community is known for going above and beyond the call of duty. On Sept. 13, the Central City branch of the Harris County Medical Society honored the employees of Texas Medical Center-area hospitals for their dedication to patient care and safety during and after Tropical Storm Allison at its meeting, "Lessons in Disaster Management: Allison and its Aftermath."

"My sincerest admiration and salute go to the men and women whose tireless work kept thousands of patients safe in the wake of Allison," said Dr. Susan Dobbs Curling, president of the Harris County Medical Society. "These staff members will not likely get bonuses or recognition. But each and every one of them, from physicians and nurses to the maintenance crew members and now construction crews, deserve the thanks of a grateful community."

Dr. Alan Glombicki, president of the Central City branch of the Harris County Medical Society, presented special awards to Dr. David E. Persse, physician director of emergency medical services for the city of Houston, and Dr. Thomas Horvath, chief of staff at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, for their coordination of patient care during and after Tropical Storm Allison.

Dr. Persse and Dr. Horvath were charged with identifying and allocating clinical resources in the Houston area. They worked with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Southeast Texas Trauma Regional Advisory Council to get patients the care they needed, when resources were severely strained. They also gave a presentation on the lessons learned in disaster management.

The Harris County Medical Society, established in 1903, is the professional organization for physicians, representing more than 8,650 physicians and medical students in Harris County. It is the largest county medical society in the nation. The Central City HCMS branch consists of member physicians who work or reside within Loop 610.
