Chinese, U.S. Health Professionals Meet for First Time in Texas Medical Center

About 150 Chinese scientists, physicians, and university and hospital officials are expected to attend the first-ever joint meeting of Chinese and United States health care professionals in Houston, Dec. 10-16 at the Marriott Hotel in the Texas Medical Center.

The symposium, titled "Medicine in the 21st Century - First Sino-U.S. Symposium," will help establish a bridge for collaborative study between the two countries, according to symposium organizers. The symposium is designed to bring together medical professionals and leaders from China and the United States to interact with their counterparts; discuss health care, medical education, clinical medicine and biomedical research; and plan for challenges of the new century.

Under the auspices of the Chinese and American medical associations, Texas Medical Center institutions are sponsoring the program-The University of Texas Health Science Center and Medical School at Houston, UT M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Baylor College of Medicine, and the Methodist Healthcare System. Organizers are the Society of Medicine and Bio-Technology of the Chinese Association of Professionals in Sciences and Technology and the U.S.-Sino International Exchange Center for Medical Sciences.

The program includes presentations by more than 40 physicians, medical scientists and medical school leaders from both nations, including Dr. Randolph D. Smoak Jr., president of the American Medical Association. Other U.S. speakers include Nobel Laureate Dr. Ferid Murad, director of the Institute of Molecular Medicine and chairman of the Department of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology at UT-Houston; Dr. Michael DeBakey, cardiovascular surgeon and chancellor emeritus of Baylor; Dr. John Mendelsohn, president of M.D. Anderson; Dr. Ralph Feigin, president of Baylor; and Dr. James T. Willerson, interim president of UT-Houston.

Speakers from China include medical school presidents and academicians representing biotechnology, cancer prevention, radiation oncology, neuroscience, microsurgery and alternative medicine. Taiwan, Singapore and Macao will also send delegations.

All sessions will take place in English. The symposium will include a welcome reception, a gala banquet and tours of several clinical and research facilities in the Texas Medical Center, as well as scientific presentations.
