Dr. John P. McGovern Among Honorees at Museum District Day
The Houston Museum District Association celebrated the opening of its fourth annual Museum District Day by honoring its three founders, Dr. John P. McGovern, M.D.; Houston Endowment Inc.; and the South Main Center Association. Truett Latimer, President of the Houston Museum of Natural Science; Dr. Peter Marzio, Director of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and Marti Mayo, Director of the Contemporary Arts Museum, thanked Dr. McGovern of the John P. McGovern Foundation; Jack Blanton of Houston Endowment Inc.; and Susan Young, President of the South Main Center Association, with a certificate in recognition of their vision and leadership in the development of the Houston Museum District Association. On hand to mark the occasion were Mayor Lee P. Brown, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, and City Controller Sylvia Garcia. Also recognized at the ceremony were Ed Wulfe, chairman of Museum District Day and currently chairman of the Main Street Coalition; Peter Diaz, station manager of KHOU-TV, a sponsor of Museum District Day through the station's Our Family-Your Family project; and representatives from State Farm, UTMB Choice One and Williams, all Our Family-Your Family sponsors. Museum District Day is held annually in the fall. Eleven museums waive their general admission fee and offer visitors free METRO shuttle service to sample the district's diverse offerings of art, science, nature and history. One of the largest cultural districts in the country, Houston's Museum District Day draws more than five million visitors annually. This year visitors made 64,000 visits to 11 museums. ©2006 Texas Medical Center E-Mail: tmcinfo@texmedctr.tmc.edu URL: http://www.tmc.edu/tmcnews/10_15_00/page_03.html |
