Ronald McDonald House Family Room Needs Volunteers Ronald McDonald House of Houston has expanded its services into Texas Children's Hospital by way of "Family Rooms." These rooms serve as a respite for weary families of children being treated on the Hematology/Oncology inpatient floor and at the Texas Children's Cancer Center outpatient clinic. A third room, which will serve the ICU area with a 20-bedroom facility, is scheduled to open next spring.
As the Family Rooms at Texas Children's Hospital open, Ronald McDonald House is focusing volunteer needs on the new hospital home.
In the first two rooms, volunteers will greet guests, keep rooms clean and stocked with food, and play games with the patients. Volunteers will also assist the Texas Children's Hospital staff, if needed.
Evening and weekend volunteers are needed to work at least two shifts a month in the inpatient Family Room. Evening shifts are 6 to 9 p.m. and weekend shifts are from 9 a.m. to noon, noon to 3 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. Both Saturday and Sunday volunteers are needed.
The outpatient room will open in early November and weekday volunteers are needed. The shifts available will be from 9 a.m. to noon, noon to 3 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m.
It is preferred that volunteers to commit to a once-a-week shift, but volunteers who will work two shifts per month would be accepted.
