Cattlemen for Cancer Research Stampedes Into Third Year By DANNI SABOTA The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Volunteers and event staff are busy working on details for the third annual Cattlemen for Cancer Research auction to benefit the Department of Veterinary Sciences at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Oct. 13 at Hills Prairie Livestock Auction Company in Bastrop.
M.D. Anderson supporter Dr. Charles W. Graham will host the day-long festivities, which will include a silent auction beginning at 11 a.m., a live cattle auction at 2 p.m., and entertainment by The Heartbeats from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Food and refreshments will be served "chuckwagon style" throughout the day, featuring Lopez Hamburgers - a Central Texas favorite.
"We are excited by the increasing success of this now annual event," explains Dr. Michale E. Keeling, chairman of the Department of Veterinary Sciences at M.D. Anderson. "Cattlemen for Cancer Research offers friends of M.D. Anderson in the Central Texas area some traditional fun and fellowship as well as an opportunity to directly support important programs. All of the funds generated from this event support comparative cancer research being conducted at the Bastrop campus and programs specifically benefiting patients and their families from this region."
Last year's Cattlemen for Cancer Research event drew 300 supporters and netted $75,000, more than doubling the proceeds of $38,000 from the inaugural event year. With $10,000 of the 2000 funds, the event committee established a special fund at M.D. Anderson to aid patients and their families from Williamson, Travis, Lee, Bastrop and Hays counties who may need financial assistance with lodging, meals and similar services while staying in Houston to receive care.
M.D. Anderson's Department of Veterinary Sciences is located on a 374-acre research complex in rural Bastrop County that houses 3,100 animals, representing 12 different species. The facility, which provides specialized veterinary services, animal models and biologics for biomedical research, employs about 90 faculty and staff members from the Central Texas area. n
