In an annual report by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for fiscal year 1999-2000, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston led all Texas public, health science centers in research expenditures for medical sciences, child health and human development, and substance abuse.

Research expenditures for the medical sciences totaled $103.2 million at UT-Houston, compared with $98.8 million at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, which ranked second. The medical sciences category broadly includes clinical medical sciences, public health and dentistry.

For the second year in a row, UT-Houston led the child health and human development category with $10.2 million, followed by UT Southwestern, which jumped from a tie for seventh place to second place with $7.2 million.

Also for the second year in a row, UT-Houston maintained its first-place rank in the substance abuse category with $3.1 million. The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston ranked second with $1.3 million.

"These rankings are a real tribute to our faculty members, who have built the kind of leading-edge programs that enable us to rank among the leaders in a state with great universities," said Dr. George Stancel, interim executive vice president for research and dean of The UT-Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. "They also underscore the support our investigators get from the members of their individual research teams, including postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and staff members, and the many others at UT-Houston whose efforts provide the infrastructure needed to achieve these rankings. The faculty and all those who contribute to our research program should take great pride in our research accomplishments and recognition."

Both UT-Houston and UT-Southwestern led in three of the eight areas of special interest singled out in the report. UT-Southwestern pulled ahead of UT-Houston in cardiovascular research and mental health expenditures. It also continued to lead the biological and other life sciences category. UTMB led in aging research, and The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center led in cancer research.

Among health science centers, UT-Houston's $82.9 million was second to UT Southwestern's $109.1 million in total federal research expenditures. UT-Houston's total research expenditures from all sources of $122.9 million ranked third among health science centers and fifth among all research institutions, following Texas A&M University, The University of Texas at Austin, UT-Southwestern and M. D. Anderson. A complete text of the Coordinating Board report is available online at http://www.thecb.state.tx.us/ Research Expenditures.
