10th Annual Race for the Cure Oct. 7 The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure® is the largest series of 5K runs in the United States. The Houston Affiliate Race will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000. It will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Post Oak Boulevard near Oshman's® SuperSports USA® in the Galleria/Uptown Houston area. There will be a women only 5K run/walk, one mile family walk, or corporations can register teams of three to five women. Applicants not able to attend can register as Phantom Runners, and a T-shirt will be mailed after the race. Attracting serious, as well as recreational runners and walkers, the Komen Race for the Cure® is also an emotionally charged affirmation of life for the thousands of survivors who take part each year. The Komen Race for the Cure® series has been nationally recognized as a premier sporting event by Runner's World and Running Times magazines. Houston Race officials expect 20,000 participants and to raise more than $850,000. Seventy-five percent of the proceeds will remain in Houston and will fund screenings, breast health care and community education programs, including Houston's medically underserved population. The remaining 25 percent will be sent to the Susan G. Komen Foundation's International Grants Program. The Houston Affiliate was started in the spring of 1990 and is one of the largest affiliate memberships in the country, with approximately 1,000 members. Since 1990, it has raised nearly $2.5 million for breast cancer research and community outreach programs in the greater Houston area. The mission of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.
