Free Breast Health Directory Now Available The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and the Houston affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation have teamed to produce and distribute a new Breast Health Resource Directory. The new directory was unveiled at a Komen Houston Survivors' Party Sept. 6. This third edition of the Breast Health Resource Directory serves to educate women faced with a breast health concern or cancer diagnosis. It is a compilation of a wide range of information and community resources about breast cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and survival. "We hope this directory will provide confidence and assurance to women in making informed choices and decisions, regarding treatment and care for breast cancer," says Shirley Coskey, president of Komen Houston. The directory is available free to anyone requesting a copy, through the partnership of Komen Houston and M. D. Anderson. "We believe that informed decisions, early detection and prompt treatment are the key to breast health. This directory is our gift of resources, given to the Houston community by people who care," says Coskey. The mission of Komen Houston is to eradicate breast cancer, as a life-threatening disease, by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Komen Houston, which has funded grants totaling more than $2.5 million in the Houston metropolitan area during the past decade. "It is essential for women to be well-informed about breast health, and this new directory is an excellent source for the most current information." says Dr. Bernard Levin, M. D. Anderson's vice president for cancer prevention. "We applaud the partnership of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation with M. D. Anderson, and we look forward to continued collaborative efforts in the future." According to American Cancer Society figures, an estimated 11,500 women in Texas are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer during 2000. Of these, an estimated 2,600 women are expected to die.
