Dr. ZoAnn Dreyer Enjoys Many Roles

By LORI WILLIAMS
Baylor College of Medicine

Dr. ZoAnn Dreyer is a familiar face in many places. As medical director of the outpatient clinic at Texas Children's Hospital's Cancer Center, Dr. Dreyer interacts with hundreds of patients in the long-term survivor program, which she also directs.

"I find it rewarding to care for a challenging group of patients over a long period of time," says Dr. Dreyer. "I get to know them, their siblings, and their parents."

As someone who loves to meet people, Dr. Dreyer enjoys her varied roles, and says her patients inspire her.

"It's fascinating to me to see a 5-year-old who's already a cancer survivor," says Dr. Dreyer. "To have been diagnosed, treated and now surviving. It's incredible."

Patients in the program range in age from age five to their late 30s.

In addition to her roles at Texas Children's Hospital, Dr. Dreyer reaches hundreds of thousands of viewers as a television medical reporter for Baylor College of Medicine and Houston's FOX 26 News.

Dr. Dreyer reports on all types of medical news, from general health information to cutting-edge research. Her caring relationship with her patients is picked up by the television camera, where she appears as host of Baylor's Healthline. In that role, she explains medical news in a personal manner that relates to everyday life.

"I learn a lot from every story we do," says Dr. Dreyer. "I love to hear from people who saw a report and learned something from it. Most of the time these people had no idea about the subject until they saw the report."

Dr. Dreyer is married to a pediatric cardiologist, and has a 7-year-old son.
