TIRR Foundation's "Hand In Hand With Hope Saddles Up For A Cowboy Christmas" is set for Thursday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. in the Edwin Hornberger Conference Center. The second annual country western gala and auction benefits the TIRR Emily Endowment, established in the name of Emily Conner, the 21-year-old daughter of Anne and Tom Conner, whose spinal cord was injured in 1996.

The endowment supports Mission Connect, a consortium of TIRR (The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research), Baylor College of Medicine, The University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center and The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, as well as a group of outstanding research scientists throughout the world, all dedicated to spinal cord regeneration research.

"One hundred percent of net funds raised through the 1998 Hand In Hand With Hope will be used exclusively to fund research," says Cindy Lucia, executive director, TIRR Foundation.

Underwriters (tables of 10) range from $3,000 to $10,000. Individual gala tickets are priced from $150 to $1,000. For ticket information, call TIRR Foundation, 713-528-0123.

    Running for the Children

It's time to sign up for the Texas Children's Hospital Marathon/5K training program benefiting the Texas Children's Wellness Center and Texas Children's Cancer Center. This program is a great resource for those runners or walkers who want to complete the Methodist Health Care Houston Marathon or Southwestern Bell Spirit of Texas Charity 5K scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999. Training schedules, T-shirts, monthly brown bag presentations on running and walking topics, fitness evaluations and participation in group runs are available for program members.

While finishing the marathon or 5K is important, the program's main focus is to raise money for the Wellness Center and Texas Children's Cancer Center. Last year, runners and walkers raised more than $10,000. So, lace up those shoes and start "running for the children."

"The Texas Children's Hospital Marathon/5K training program is a great way to increase your level of fitness while running or walking for a great cause," says Molly Abbott, M.Ed., exercise specialist in the Texas Children's Wellness Center. "Everyone is welcome to join in the fun, whether you are going for a personal best in the marathon or walking in the 5K."

For more information about the kick-off on Wednesday, Sept. 2, and how to participate, call Molly Abbott in the Wellness Center at 713/770-3074.
