Meetings & Special Events
- Grief Education/Support Group, Life After Loss is a six-week group support program designed by the American Cancer Society for bereaved people. It will be held in two different locations (Memorial Hermann Hospital Southwest and John Wesley United Methodist Church) beginning Sept. 7 and Sept. 12. For information, call 713-468-2441.

Compassion and the Art of Medicine, a lecture series sponsored by Baylor College of Medicine's Department of Family and Community Medicine, has two remaining talks. On Sept. 8, William F. Monroe, professor of English at the University of Houston, teaches a course titled "Literature and Medicine." Monroe is author of "Primary Care," a play based on actual events at a Houston hospital. On Sept. 15, Dr. Richard Fratianne, director of the Comprehensive Burn Care Center at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, will discuss compassion and what happens when the doctor becomes a patient. Friends of Fondren Library Distinguished Guest Lecture Series presents Dr. Antonio R. Damasio, scientist and author, Sept. 17, at Stude Hall on the Rice University campus. Dr. Damasio is head of the Department of Neurology at the University of Iowa and professor at the Salk Institute. His work has focused on the fundamental neuroscience of mind and behavior. Dr. Damasio's first book, Descarte's Error: Emotion, Reason and the Human Brain has been translated into over 20 languages. For information, call 713-348-5157.
