It’s (Not) a Washout
Hospital Provides Emergency Laundry Assistance

After continuous rainfall for several days last month, flooding in Central Texas shut down the Kerrville VA Medical Center’s laundry facility. The Kerville laundry facility provides services not only for its own hospital, but also for the VA Medical Center in San Antonio.

The two Central Texas Hospitals, with no way to wash, turned to the Houston VA Medical Center for help. The Houston hospital heeded the call, and sprang into action.

Peggy A. Moore, assistant manager of the Houston hospital’s environmental management section, and Ottis Jackson, laundry plant supervisor, quickly organized, recruited, and scheduled hospital staff members to work overtime.

A Kerrville truck, transporting soiled linen, arrived in Houston Tuesday evening, July 2. Housekeeping and laundry staff worked until 5 a.m. Wednesday morning sorting, washing and folding.

Several Houston VA Medical Center employees worked as many as 20 hours straight to ensure the linen was processed and returned quickly. Because of the teamwork and determination of the hospital staff members, patient care did not suffer at the San Antonio or Kerrville VA medical facilities.
