Pediatric Patients Have "Whale of a Time" By GAIL GOODWIN The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Young cancer patients from The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center had a whale of a good time when they flew to SeaWorld San Antonio this summer.
The trip was an annual treat for the young travelers ranging in age from 8 to 17. Hosted by Southwest Airlines and SeaWorld, the trip was funded by the Children's Art Project at M. D. Anderson as part of the project's allocation to patient-focused programs at the cancer center.
SeaWorld officials made sure the children didn't miss their weekly art class while in San Antonio. Park representatives hosted a special water-themed drawing class in a park classroom. In addition, everyone met Shamu, the park's famous killer whale, and enjoyed shows, attractions and a hands-on tour of the park. M. D. Anderson Art Volunteer Coordinator Cali Hatzisavvis had crayons, colored pencils, chalk and other art mediums for the children to use to catch some fish on paper.
"Last year our SeaWorld art class was a highlight of the trip," Hatzisavvis said. "I saw everything from penguins to sharks to Shamu himself in the children's artwork. SeaWorld helps trigger their natural creativity, and it's great fun to see the results."
In addition to SeaWorld, the group visited San Antonio's El Mercado, toured the Alamo and the Witte Museum and enjoyed a special cruise on the river. A swimming party, complete with ice cream and treats, also figured into the schedule.
The Children's Art Project at M. D. Anderson is dedicated to making life better for children with cancer. The project markets products featuring the art of pediatric patients, and all proceeds from their sales return to the cancer center to fund educational programs there. Last year, the art project supported more than $1.5 million in patient programs such as two in-hospital classrooms, college scholarships for current and former patients, as well as the art classes for the children.
