  • Houston International Community Health Summit (HICHS) 2000, Sept. 21-22, at the Crowne Plaza Houston Medical Center. The summit is dedicated to improving health within ethnically diverse communities by identifying at-risk populations and fostering cultural competence among Houston's health care professionals. By linking with professionals from around the world, HICHS hopes to gain from the success of others. Topics for this year's summit are: Cultural Competence & Spirituality; Substance Use and Mental Health; Community Health and Outcomes; and Vulnerable Populations.   • Star Consumers Moving Toward Success, a conference of clients of the Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority of Harris County, Sept 13, 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., at the Edwin Hornberger Conference Center. For information, call 713-970-7200.

  • `Compassion and the Art of Medicine' series begins Baylor College of Medicine's department of family and community medicine presents this very interesting and provocative series of guest lectures with a grant from The Community Hospital Foundation Inc. and sponsorship from Park Plaza Warwick Hotel. Admission is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Reservations are not required. Free brown-bag lunches will be available to the first 200 attendees. Presentations begin at noon, followed by a question-and-answer session at 1 p.m. All sessions will be held in the McMillian Auditorium at Baylor College of Medicine, which is located in the Michael E.     • Aug. 18: Carmen Fraser, Rosie Robertson and Michael Mousteiko are all breast cancer survivors. They will talk about their illness, along with Thomas Meloncon, author of "Before Time Runs Out."

    • Aug. 25: Nathaniel Lachenmeyer learned of his father's death in 1995, and began a journey to rediscover the loving father who had disappeared when he was only 12. Nathaniel will talk about his coming to understand his father's descent into schizophrenia and homelessness.

    • Sept. 1: Dr. Alan Blum, founder of DOC (Doctors Ought to Care), is one of the most knowledgeable critics of the tobacco industry. Additionally, Dr. Blum is an artist and writer; his portraits of patients have appeared in numerous journals.
