Children's Health Insurance Available

Over the next two months, the Harris County Department of Public Health and Environmental Services (HCPHES) has a special program to assist families that may qualify for Medicaid. There has been an expansion to the Medicaid program that now allows older teens, 15 through 18 years old, to be eligible for the program. The Texas legislature authorized the expansion of the Medicaid program as the first step of the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

HCPHES is providing outreach services to educate and identify individuals, who are eligible, help families fill out applications and answer any questions about Medicaid or the enrollment process. Once identified, the HCPHES outreach worker will direct the client to the Medicaid approving agency, the Texas Department of Human Services, to complete the application process.

The following provides an overview of the Medicaid Services:

Eligibility

Your child must:

  • Be a Texas resident and a U.S. citizen or have acceptable alien status;
  • Be under 19 years of age;
  • Meet income eligibility limits;
  • Family cannot have assets such as checking accounts worth more than $2,000.

Services

The program provides prevention, diagnosis and medical treatment. Children receive regular medical and dental checkups, as well as treatment for problems discovered during checkups and prescriptions, at no cost.

Application Process

If your child is potentially eligible, you will need to apply with the Texas Department of Human Services. You must bring proof of the birth of the child, record of immunization for children under 6 years of age, proof of earnings and proof of resources.
