DeBakey High School Students Earn Scholarships by JOHN TYLER Baylor College of Medicine Nine Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions students are on their way to college and medical school through the Houston Premedical Academy. The eight-year program is a partnership between the high school, the University of Houston and Baylor College of Medicine, where the students are offered the opportunity to receive two four-year scholarships to UH and Baylor, respectively, after graduating from high school. The nine students who were selected as part of the program’s seventh entering class are: Cindy Cedillo, Charity Halphen, Irogue I. Igbinosa, Jessica L. Jones, Aliya Laws, Lan Lou, Judith Mata, Sara S. Mouzi and Thuy Thi Nguyen. "These students’ academic track records and dedication to the health sciences clearly defines each of them as the type of student who flourishes at Baylor," said Ralph D. Feigin, M.D., Baylor president. "We look forward to working with them as they prepare for medical school." The students will begin classes at UH this fall. They must complete all UH degree requirements and maintain a specified overall grade point average and science grade point average in addition to completing Baylor premedical prerequisites before entering medical school. Selection in the Houston Premedical Academy is based on outstanding academic achievement, high scores on standardized tests, interviews and teacher recommendations. ©1996-2002 Texas Medical Center
