Learning to Do; Doing to Learn; Earning to Live; Living to Serve - this is the motto of the National FFA Organization. These 12 short words were taken to heart by 20 members of the Texas FFA Association on July 9.

These members, both outgoing and incoming Texas FFA state officer teams, were in Houston for their annual State FFA Convention. The officers, accompanied by their advisor, and representatives from both the Harris County Medical Society and the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, were on a Goodwill Tour to observe how agricultural sciences are put to practical use in the medical field, and thank Houston-area supporters of the organization for their support.

The delegation made stops at the Museum of Health & Medical Science, The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and the Texas A&M Institute of Biosciences and Technology, a component of the Texas A&M University System Health Science Center.

At the museum, the group toured the exhibit "A Show of Hands," a special hands-on summertime exhibit that explores the distinctive characteristics of the human hand. They also participated in dissecting a cow's eye and a sheep's brain.

The next stop was at M. D. Anderson, where they attended a cancer presentation that detailed the most common forms (skin, breast and prostate), and learned about measures to prevent and treat these cancers. They then met with a staff veterinarian who led them on a tour of his lab and let them "scrub up" to view current animal research.

The final stop was at the Texas A&M IBT, where two assistant professors in the Center for Extracellular Matrix Biology presented their current research projects involving ticks and Lyme disease. The group then took a tour of the labs where the professors conduct their research.

The National FFA Organization is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of young people by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
