New Nurse Program Aimed at Management

As health care management and administration become increasingly important, so are the professionals who enable those systems to operate. Nurses, in particular, are stepping forward to take a leadership role in health care delivery. A new area of study, or track, offered by the Texas Woman's University College of Nursing, will give interested nurses an opportunity to earn a graduate degree with a major in nursing/health systems management and a minor in health care administration.

"The nurse manager of today must be clinically knowledgeable, and she or he also must possess business and administrative skills to ensure that resources are used effectively and efficiently," says Dr. Rebecca Krepper, associate professor of nursing at the TWU Institute of Health Sciences Houston Center. "This new program is structured to provide students with both business and nursing administration skills that are essential for them to succeed in their role as managers."

TWU's College of Nursing recently received approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for the new graduate track, which will comprise several essential components. "Nursing core courses of practice-oriented nursing theory, research and health promotion will provide a solid foundation for TWU's three nursing administration practicums," explains Dr. Krepper. "Business courses will include economics, accounting, finance, legal and ethical issues, and marketing. Additionally, clinical practicum placements will be tailored to meet the specific career goals of individual students, allowing for placement in the multitude of opportunities that exist in health care fields today and tomorrow."

Full- and part-time options are available to interested students, and the TWU College of Nursing in Houston places an emphasis on alternative class schedules that best meet the needs of today's adult learner. Students may apply now for fall 1999 admission.

To learn more about entry requirements into the TWU graduate nursing program or for other information, call Dr. Chris Hawkins, TWU master's program coordinator in the College of Nursing, at 713- 794-2108.
