$70M Expansion Begins at Memorial Hermann Southeast by DAVID MENDEL Memorial Hermann Healthcare System A groundbreaking ceremony at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital marks the start of a $70 million capital expansion project designed to meet the escalating demands of the patient population. "While fulfilling our commitment to community care, Memorial Hermann Southeast has really felt a pinch in emergency services, so we made relocation and expansion of our emergency center a top priority," said hospital CEO Dan Martin. "Since 1994, emergency department volume has increased 77 percent and admissions are up 57 percent. Diagnostic and therapeutic visits have risen 64 percent in the past eight years. Our expansion addresses these growing patient needs and those of the future." The project will provide expanded clinical and diagnostic areas including a new emergency center, a heart center featuring a state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratory, 18 additional intensive care unit beds, and expansion of the hospital’s bed tower to make way for a future 30-bed nursing unit. Plans also call for construction of a new, freestanding central plant, more than 750 additional parking spaces, and enhanced landscaping. The expansion will provide a total of 175,000 square feet of new space on the first through fourth floors of Memorial Hermann Southeast. The proposed design also includes alternate options for future modifications in pharmacy, medical records, central processing and supply, maintenance shops, outpatient surgery, stage 2 recovery and labor/delivery/recovery areas. The hospital expansion will be executed in two phases with completion slated for fall 2004. ©2006 Texas Medical Center E-Mail: tmcinfo@texmedctr.tmc.edu URL: http://www.tmc.edu/tmcnews/07_15_02/page_03.html |
