Houston-area veterans who participated in the liberation of France from Nazi occupation during World War II, were honored by the French Consul General in a special ceremony at the Houston VA Medical Center July 2.

Pierre Lepetit, consul general of France in Houston, presented veterans with certificates from the French government. The certificates expressed the appreciation of the French people for the sacrifices made by the Allied soldiers, sailors and aviators.

"It's encouraging to see that the efforts of this great generation of Americans have not gone unnoticed by the countries they helped liberate," said Thomas R. Wagner, director of the Houston VA Regional Office. "I applaud the French government for honoring our World War II veterans."

In presenting these certificates, the French government is paying tribute to those Americans who fought for French freedom. This gesture will assure these veterans that their sacrifices were not, and will never be, forgotten, Wagner said.
