McGovern to Receive Hospice Award

Dr. John P. McGovern will receive the Hospice at the Texas Medical Center's Laura Lee Blanton Community Spirit Award. The award, in its second year, will be presented at the Hospice's 18th annual gala on Wednesday, October 24 at River Oaks Country Club. Dr. and Mrs. Denton Cooley and Mr. and Mrs. David Underwood will serve as the event's honorary co-chairs with Linda Lyons Brown serving as gala chair.

"Over the years, Dr. McGovern has supported the many Hospice programs serving terminally ill patients and their families with care and dignity. His generous support of the Hospice's programs benefiting patients facing the end of life is a testament to his commitment to the mission of the Hospice at the Texas Medical Center," said Jack Lynch, chairman of the Board at the Hospice at the Texas Medical Center.

John P. McGovern, M.D. is the namesake for the John P. Mc Govern Historical Collections and Research Center of the Houston Academy of Medicine - Texas Medical Center Library. For more than 20 years, Dr. McGovern served as the honorary curator of rare books for the library, and he donated his extensive rare book collection to the Library's History of Medicine Section. Dr. McGovern is internationally noted as a distinguished American physician, philanthropist, humanitarian, and scholar. professional societies, government agencies, universities, and foreign countries have given recognition to his vision, leadership, integrity, character, and achievements. he is also the founder of the McGovern Allergy and Asthma Clinic in Houston, Texas, and is president of the board of he John P. McGovern Foundation and the McGovern Fund.

Proceeds from this year's gala will benefit the Hospice's terminally ill patients and their families. Tables may be reserved at the following levels: $20,000, Underwriter; $15,000, Benefactor; $10,000, Sponsor; or $5,000, Patron.
