  • Town Hall Meetings for Seniors, Vets
    U.S. Congressman Ken Bentsen will hold community meetings to answer questions and address concerns of senior citizens and veterans living in the 25th District. Representatives from the Social Security Administration, the Health Care Finance Administration (Medicare), the Texas Department of Insurance and the Area Agency on Aging will be in attendance. The meetings are scheduled for: Highlands/Baytown, July 5, 2 p.m., at Highlands Senior Center, 604 Wallisville Rd.; Southwest Houston, July 6, 9:30 a.m., Bayland Community Center, 6400 Bissonnet; South Houston, July 7, 10 a.m., Tom Bass Regional Park, 15108 Cullen Blvd.; Pasadena, July 10, 9:30 a.m. San Jacinto College Admin.   • The American Foundation of Thyroid Patients will host two low-cost ($15) thyroid screening clinics, July 8, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., at Brenwood Park subdivision clubhouse in Katy, and July 9, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at Grace Lutheran Church, 2515 Waugh Dr. For further information, call 281-855-6608.

  • Abstracts for posters to be exhibited at the 4th annual Houston International Community Health Summit (HICHS) are now being accepted. Twenty poster sites are available for posters that promote research in various areas of community health. The posters will be displayed during the two days of the conference. Abstracts should be submitted by July 31, 2000. Topics for posters should reflect the major categories of this year's conference: Cultural Competence and Spirituality; Substance Abuse and Mental Health; Community Health and Outcomes; and Vulnerable Populations (Women, Elderly, Disabled). HICHS is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving health within ethnically diverse communities by identifying at-risk populations and fostering cultural competence among Houston's health care professionals.

  • St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital's Wellness Services will host two Red Cross-certified CPR classes for the general public, July 22, at 6900 Fannin (at Holcombe). The adult CPR class begins at 10 a.m., and the child/infant class begins at noon. For information or to register, call 713-791-8680.

  • Come out of the heat on July 8 and visit some of the 28 galleries that will be hosting a wide variety of events for ArtHouston 2000. Participating galleries are along Colquitt, in the Museum District and Downtown. The spotlight this year will be on Texas Children's Cancer Center and their Arts in Medicine program.   • Grief Education and Support Program Offered at M. D. Anderson
    Though a majority of patients now survive their cancers, there are many who do not win their fight. To support those who have lost friends and loved ones to illness, a grief and support program is being offered at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

    The six week series "Life after Loss," is presented by M. D. Anderson's department of social work and will be held July 13 through August 17, 2000. Meetings are scheduled every Thursday from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Place...of wellness located at M. D. Anderson, 1515 Holcombe Blvd.

    The program for the group series was developed by the American Cancer Society to help bereaved people learn about the grief process, share their emotions and develop coping skills.
